A season is a time of year with its own kind of weather. There are four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Each season brings different temperatures and weather, so people dress differently, eat different foods, and enjoy different activities to stay safe, comfortable, and happy.
Remember the rule
Season changes → Weather changes → People change too! Dress, eat, and play to match the season.
Key words
- Season
- One of the four times of year — spring, summer, fall, or winter — each with its own weather pattern.
- Weather
- What the air outside feels like each day, such as sunny, rainy, cold, or windy.
- Temperature
- How hot or cold the air is outside. We measure it in degrees.
- Spring
- The season after winter when it warms up, rain falls, and plants start to grow.
- Summer
- The hottest season of the year with long, sunny days.
- Fall
- The season after summer when it cools down and leaves change color and drop from trees. Also called autumn.
- Winter
- The coldest season of the year when some places get snow and ice.
- Adapt
- To change what you do or wear to match the weather or season.
Worked examples
It is summer and very hot outside. What should Maya wear and what can she do?
→ Maya should wear shorts, a t-shirt, and sandals. She can go swimming, play at the park, or eat ice cream to cool down. · Wearing light clothes in summer helps your body stay cool and comfortable.
It is winter and there is snow on the ground. What should Carlos wear before going outside?
→ Carlos should wear a heavy coat, boots, mittens, a hat, and a scarf. · Layers of warm clothing trap heat close to your body and keep you from getting too cold.
It is fall and the air is cool and breezy. The leaves are turning orange and red. What is a fun fall activity?
→ Raking leaves into a pile and jumping in them, or picking apples at an apple orchard, are great fall activities. · Fall foods like apples and pumpkins are harvested in this season because that is when they are ripe.
It is spring and it has been raining a lot. Emma wants to go outside. What should she bring?
→ Emma should bring a raincoat and rain boots so she stays dry while she plays and looks for earthworms. · Spring rain helps flowers and grass grow, which is why we see so many new plants in spring.
Name one food people often eat in each season.
→ Spring: strawberries. Summer: watermelon. Fall: pumpkin pie. Winter: hot soup or cocoa. · Many foods grow best in certain seasons, so we eat them when they are fresh and ready.
Why do schools often have summer break instead of winter break as the longest vacation?
→ Summer break is long because in the past, children helped on farms during harvest. Also, summer days are hot and old school buildings had no air conditioning, making it hard to learn. · The way we live — even our school schedule — is shaped by the seasons.
Common mistakes
- Thinking all four seasons happen everywhere the same way. Some places, like Florida, stay warm all year, while Alaska gets very cold winters. Seasons feel different depending on where you live.
- Mixing up fall and spring. Both are mild and in-between, but spring comes AFTER winter and things are growing, while fall comes AFTER summer and leaves are falling.
- Forgetting that seasons are opposite in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. When it is summer in the United States, it is winter in Australia.
- Thinking weather and season are the same thing. Season is the whole time of year (like all of winter). Weather is what happens on one specific day (like a snowy Tuesday).
- Saying there are only two seasons — hot and cold. There are four seasons, and spring and fall are important in-between seasons with their own special weather and activities.
FAQs
Why are there four seasons?
Earth travels around the sun all year long and it is tilted on its side a little. Different parts of Earth get more or less sunlight at different times of the year, and that changes the temperature and weather, giving us four seasons.
Do all countries have the same four seasons at the same time?
No. Countries near the middle of the Earth, called the equator, stay warm and sunny most of the year and do not have four big seasons. Countries far from the equator have four clear seasons, but winter and summer happen at opposite times in the northern and southern halves of the Earth.
Why do we change our clothes for each season?
We change clothes to keep our bodies at a safe and comfortable temperature. Warm, heavy clothes trap body heat in winter. Light, loose clothes let heat escape in summer so we stay cool.
Why do some animals sleep all winter? Is that a season change too?
Yes! Some animals like bears hibernate, which means they sleep through winter when food is hard to find. This is their way of adapting to the season, just like people put on coats or drink hot cocoa.
How do I know which season it is right now?
Look outside and notice the temperature, the trees, and the daylight. Are leaves falling? It is fall. Is it snowy and very cold? It is winter. Are flowers blooming and it is rainy? It is spring. Is it very hot with long sunny days? It is summer.
Can it snow in spring or be hot in fall?
Yes, sometimes the weather on a single day does not match what is typical for the season. Weather can surprise us, but the overall pattern of the season still follows its usual plan. Always check the forecast before going outside.
