Geography is the study of the Earth and everything on it, like land, water, weather, and the people and animals that live in different places. It helps us understand where things are and why they look the way they do.
Remember the rule
From biggest to smallest: Earth → Continent → Country → State → City. You always live inside something bigger!

- Ocean
- A huge body of salt water. There are five oceans on Earth.

Worked examples
Can you find North America on a globe?
→ Yes! North America is the large continent in the top half of the globe. The United States, Canada, and Mexico are all part of North America. · A globe shows all seven continents at the same time, which makes it easy to compare their sizes.
What is the difference between a map and a globe?
→ A globe is round like the real Earth. A map is flat, like a piece of paper. Both show where places are, but a globe is more accurate in shape. · Maps are easier to carry and use every day, so we use them more often.
Where does your city fit in the world?
→ Your city is inside a state, your state is inside a country (the United States), your country is inside a continent (North America), and your continent is on planet Earth. · This order — from small to big — helps us describe exactly where we live.
Name two kinds of landforms.
→ A mountain is a very tall piece of land that rises high above the ground. An island is a piece of land that has water all around it. Hawaii is an island state! · Knowing landform names helps us describe and understand places we read or hear about.
How many continents and oceans are there?
→ There are 7 continents: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. There are 5 oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic. · A fun way to remember the 7 continents is to start with the biggest: Asia is the largest continent of all.
What does a map key (legend) do?
→ A map key explains what the symbols and colors on a map mean. For example, a blue area means water, and a green area might mean a forest or park. · Always check the map key first so you know how to read the map correctly.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up a map and a globe — remember, a globe is round and a map is flat.
- Thinking the United States is a continent — it is a country inside the continent of North America.
- Forgetting that oceans are salt water — lakes and rivers are fresh water and are much smaller than oceans.
- Mixing up states and countries — a state (like Texas) is a part of a country (the United States).
- Thinking the Equator is a real line you can see on the ground — it is imaginary and only shown on maps and globes.
