Telling time means looking at a clock and figuring out what hour or half-hour it is. In 1st grade, we read clocks to the hour (like 3:00) and to the half-hour (like 3:30).
Remember the rule
Short hand = hour, long hand = minutes. Long hand at 12 means o'clock (:00). Long hand at 6 means thirty (:30).
Key words
- Clock
- A tool that shows what time it is, with a round face, numbers 1–12, and two hands.
- Hour hand
- The short hand on a clock. It points to the hour.
- Minute hand
- The long hand on a clock. When it points straight up to 12, it is an exact hour. When it points straight down to 6, it is the half-hour.
- Hour
- A unit of time. There are 24 hours in a day.
- Half-hour
- 30 minutes, or half of an hour. The minute hand points to the 6 at the half-hour.
- O'clock
- A word meaning exactly on the hour, like 2 o'clock means the time is exactly 2:00.
- Minute
- A small unit of time. There are 60 minutes in one hour.
- Analog clock
- A clock with a round face and moving hands, as opposed to a digital clock that shows numbers.
Worked examples
The short hand points to 3 and the long hand points to 12. What time is it?
→ 3:00 (three o'clock) · When the long hand is on 12, it is always an exact hour.
The short hand points to 7 and the long hand points to 12. What time is it?
→ 7:00 (seven o'clock) · The short hand tells you the hour — here it is 7.
The short hand points between 2 and 3, and the long hand points to 6. What time is it?
→ 2:30 (two thirty) · When the long hand is on 6, we say thirty. The hour hand is past 2 but not yet at 3, so the hour is still 2.
The short hand points between 9 and 10, and the long hand points to 6. What time is it?
→ 9:30 (nine thirty) · The hour hand moves slowly and is between 9 and 10 at the half-hour mark, but we still say 9:30.
A digital clock shows 5:00. Where would the hands be on an analog clock?
→ The short hand points exactly to 5, and the long hand points exactly to 12.
A digital clock shows 11:30. Where would the hands be on an analog clock?
→ The long hand points to 6, and the short hand is halfway between 11 and 12. · Drawing this on paper can really help you see it!
Common mistakes
- Mixing up the hour hand and minute hand — remember: short = hour, long = minutes.
- At the half-hour, saying the next hour instead of the current one (saying 3:30 instead of 2:30 when the hour hand is between 2 and 3).
- Thinking the hour hand points exactly at a number even at the half-hour — it actually sits between two numbers at :30.
- Reading a clock that shows 6:00 as 12:30 because the short hand looks near 12 and the long hand is on 6.
- Forgetting to say 'o'clock' or ':00' and just saying the number alone without saying the full time.
FAQs
Why does the hour hand not point exactly at a number at the half-hour?
The hour hand moves slowly all the time. By 2:30, it has moved halfway between 2 and 3. It only points exactly at a number at o'clock times.
What does the 6 on the clock mean for the minute hand?
When the long (minute) hand points to 6, exactly 30 minutes have passed. That is why we say :30 or 'thirty.'
How is 3:00 different from 3:30?
At 3:00 the long hand is on 12 and the short hand is on 3. At 3:30 the long hand has moved to 6 and the short hand has moved halfway between 3 and 4.
Do digital clocks and analog clocks show the same time?
Yes! A digital clock showing 7:30 shows the exact same time as an analog clock with the long hand on 6 and the short hand between 7 and 8.
How many times does the minute hand go all the way around in one hour?
Exactly once. Every time it makes one full circle, 60 minutes — one whole hour — has passed.
What is a good way to practice telling time at home?
Point to a clock in your house a few times each day and say the time out loud. You can also draw clock faces and practice drawing the hands for times like 4:00 and 6:30.
