Definition

'Self' means everything that makes you YOU — your name, your age, how you look, what you like, and how you feel. 'Family' means the group of people who love and take care of you. Families can look many different ways, but every family is special.

Remember the rule

Families come in all shapes and sizes, but every family shares love and care.

Worked examples

Name two things that make you unique from your best friend.

You might say: 'I have brown eyes and my favorite food is pizza. My best friend has blue eyes and loves tacos.' Your name, your birthday, and your likes make you different from everyone else. · Even twins have different feelings and favorite things — everyone is unique!

Draw your family. Who do you include?

You draw the people who live with you and take care of you — maybe a mom, a dad, a grandma, or a guardian. Some kids add a pet too! There is no wrong answer as long as you include the people who love and care for you. · Families look different for everyone, and all kinds of families are wonderful.

Your teacher asks, 'What is your full name and how old are you?' What do you say?

You say your first name AND your last name, like 'My name is Sofia Ramirez and I am 5 years old.' Knowing your full name is an important part of knowing yourself. · Knowing your full name helps grown-ups keep you safe.

What is a family tradition? Can you name one your family has?

A tradition is something your family does again and again. For example: 'Every Sunday we make pancakes together' or 'We always read three books before bed.' Those repeated special things are your family's traditions. · Traditions help families feel close and connected.

How are families the same even when they look different?

All families have people who love and take care of each other. One family might have two moms. Another might have a grandpa as the caregiver. Another might have one parent. They all share love and care — that is what makes them a family.

Name one responsibility you have at home.

Examples: 'I put my dirty clothes in the hamper,' 'I feed the dog every morning,' or 'I help set the table for dinner.' When you do your jobs at home, you are helping your family. · Doing your part at home shows you are a caring family member.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking a family must have a mom AND a dad — families can have one parent, two moms, two dads, grandparents, foster parents, or guardians.
  • Confusing 'unique' with 'weird' — being unique just means one of a kind, and that is a good thing!
  • Forgetting their last name when asked for their full name — practice saying your first AND last name together.
  • Thinking feelings are wrong — all emotions are okay to feel; what matters is how we handle them.
  • Leaving out important family members like grandparents or step-siblings when describing their family — anyone who loves and cares for you can be part of your family.

FAQs

What if my family is different from my friend's family?

That is totally normal! Some kids live with grandparents, some with two parents, some with one parent, some with foster families. Every family is different, and every family can be full of love and care.

Why do I need to know my full name?

Your full name — first and last — helps teachers, doctors, and other grown-ups know exactly who you are. It also keeps you safe if you ever get lost or need help.

Can a pet be part of a family?

Many families think of pets as part of the family because they are loved and cared for. In Social Studies, family usually means the people who love and care for you, but your pet is very special too!

What if I feel sad, angry, or scared — is that okay?

Yes! Every feeling is okay to have. Feelings are called emotions, and everyone has them. The important thing is to talk about your feelings with a trusted family member or grown-up so they can help you.

What makes me 'me'?

You are made up of your name, your age, how you look, your feelings, your favorite things, and so much more. Nobody in the world is exactly like you — that is what makes you unique and special!

What is the difference between a household and a family?

A household is the group of people living in your home right now. A family can include people who do not live with you, like a grandparent in another city or an aunt across town. Both are important!
